9 Best Bird Cages for Budgies (Reviews)

1. Winner: TRIXIE Natura 3-Story Aviary Bird Cage

bird cage

Need a cage for 2 budgies or more?

Look no further than TRIXIE’s Natura 3-Story Aviary Bird Cage.

The cage’s three-story construction will have you more than covered.

Furthermore, its well-crafted wood design will look good indoors or outdoors.

Features & Attributes

  • Three floors
  • Made with high-quality wood material
  • Pull-out plastic tray and floor grid
  • Horizontal bars and side flap
  • Two perches
  • One ladder and climbing frame
  • Two stainless steel bowls and a feeding tray

  • 30.5 x 30.5 x 70.75 inches
  • 67.13 Pounds

Benefits of TRIXIE’s Natura 3-Story Aviary Bird Cage

  • Beautiful wood design
  • Ideal for multiple budgies
  • Simple to clean
  • Endless customization with various stories
  • Usable indoors or outdoors
  • Excellent for climbing and hanging toys

The beautiful wood design is everything a person could want in a cage. It’ll fit into your home’s decor without being an ugly eyesore.

I was also pleased with how well this option adapts to housing multiple birds. Its impressive budgie cage size and three-story design make it ideal for two or three budgies.

Cleaning this option isn’t a nightmare like other bird cages, either. The pull-out tray and floor grid make the entire process a breeze.

Customization possibilities don’t get much better than this cage, as well. You can find a place for almost any wanted accessory without much trouble.

It’s a versatile option, too, as it can handle the wear and tear from outdoor or indoor usage. It’s a perfect fit for almost any budgie owner.

I didn’t even mention that its horizontal bars are perfect for climbing and hanging toys. So your budgie or budgies will never be bored again inside this beautiful cage.

Drawbacks of TRIXIE’s Natura 3-Story Aviary Bird Cage

  • Heavy construction
  • A fellow customer, MK Fox, complained about “slow shipping.”

My only two complaints with this option are heavier construction and slow shipping speeds. But these issues aren’t massive issues that affect its overall performance.

How it Compares to Others

The cage’s ability to house multiple budgies gives it a leg up on most of its competition. So the only question is, how many budgies in a cage do you want?

I’m also a massive fan of its horizontal bars. These bars are excellent for climbing and hanging toys to ensure your budgies never get bored.

Expert Tips

  • Assembly isn’t a one-person; ask a friend or family member to help.

Benefits of Yaheetech’s 53.7-in Parrot Bird Cage & Stand

  • Excellent security with small bar spacing
  • Strong, durable construction with rust-resistance
  • Comfortable perches for multiple budgies
  • A more affordable choice
  • Convenient storage with additional shelf and feeding doors

Drawbacks of Yaheetech 53.7-in Parrot Bird Cage & Stand

  • One reviewer, Laura Tieber, noted the “caster wheels made marks all in my hardwood floors.”
  • Packing and shipping could be better

How it Compares to Others

Aside from its high security, I found myself loving its perches and affordable price. Both these aspects help keep the birds and their owners happy.

I would also be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention the product’s rust-resistant. After all, this attribute allows the cage to hold up indoors or outdoors.

Expert Tips

  • Use “zip ties” to latch it down for extra security.
Yaheetech 54-inch Wrought Iron Standing Large Parrot Parakeet Flight Bird Cage for Small Parrot Cockatiel Sun Parakeet Green Cheek Conure Lovebird Budgie Finch Canary Bird Cage with Stand
  • Solid construction: Our large bird cage is crafted out of premium metal covered with harmless hammertone paint. 2mm/ 0.08’’ thick metal wires can withstand your naughty pets’ bites. Excellent water resistance make this parrot cage a durable and safe pet cage with high quality.
  • Convenient moving: Due to its large size, it may take a little effort to move this cage. However, our parrot cage comes with a stand that sits on four 360° swivel smooth rolling casters, which can perfectly solve this problem. Detachable mobile stand can be easily removed if needed. Besides, you can even attach the casters to bottom of the cage directly to make the cage mobile without a stand.
  • Safe & Secure: 1 cm/ 0.4’’ bar spacing makes sure your small pets cannot squeeze out of the cage, which is suitable and safe for pets in different sizes. Front door is secured with crescent lock, which can prevent your smart birdies from opening the doors and keep them safe in the cage when you are not around. Special arc-shaped wire on each small door is for locking purpose, making the door impossible for birds to lift.
  • Humanized designs: Features an extra storage shelf on the stand to hold your pets’ accessories and feed, keeping them handy and neat. 4 small feeder doors on the front are for convenient feed replenishment. You can access the feeders from outside and don’t need to risk your bird fleeing. 2 polished wooden perches are provided for your birds to rest.
  • Easy to clean: A slide-out tray under the cage can be removed and cleaned with water. A grate between pets and the tray can avoid your pets walking/laying directly on their droppings, which ensures your pets’ hygiene and the tidiness of the cage.

I can’t say enough about its overly spacious design. Your budgies will have a ball inside this cage or play on top of it.

Sadly, the design does stick out in almost any home decor. But it doesn’t matter much to me when this option is such a good budgie cage.

How Do I Choose a Budgie Cage

budgie cage

Buying a budgie cage requires thinking about critical considerations, such as your pet’s lifestyle. For example, is he in the cage most of the time, or does he get a lot of flight time around your home?

If they get a lot of flight time, the cage will serve as a place for them to eat and sleep. These owners would be better off with a smaller and less expensive cage.

But if your bird stays confined or shares its cage, a bigger one would be a smart move. It’ll need more room for toys and other pivotal accessories to keep them entertained.

In any case, I’ll cover several other aspects below to ensure picking a cage becomes easy. Let’s make sure you get the perfect one for your parakeet.

Budgies or parakeets are known for being active animals. In other words, these animals require room to play and move around within their cages.

An easy way to find a suitable cage size is getting one that’s “1.5 times the bird’s adult wingspan” [1]. Then, it’ll have no issues providing enough room for all their activities.

Therefore, a parakeet’s ideal cage size would be at least 18 inches. Any cage smaller than 18 inches could injure your favorite bird’s feathers and cause bleeding.

I’d also think about what toys, perches, and other accessories will be in the cage. The cage will have to offer enough room for those items without making your bird uncomfortable.

Owners with multiple parakeets need to buy a cage that’s at least 1.5 times as big. Finding a product’s measurements won’t be challenging as they’ll be right in the product descriptions.

Climbing is a favorite pastime of budgies [2] as it’s an instinct for them. As a result, it’d make sense to purchase a cage with horizontal bars to make climbing easier.

But don’t overlook the spacing of the bars when considering your cage’s design. It should never be more than 5/8 inches between to avoid dangerous situations.

I once bought a cage larger than 5/8 inches of bar spacing. It only led to my parakeet trying to escape and almost getting caught (not ideal at all).

Other design features will play a role in this decision, as well. You’ll need to consider the cage door’s size and ease of access to food/water cups.

Furthermore, a cage’s size will matter a lot to the person who’s cleaning it. There must be enough room to maneuver around during the cleaning process.

It doesn’t help that budgies aren’t very neat eaters. They’re known for scattering more seed around their enclosures than what gets into their stomachs.

budgie eating in cage

Worthwhile bird cages will consist of durable and easy-to-clean materials. On the flip side, you’ll want to avoid flaky coatings on your preferred budgie cage.

Any curious budgie will try to ingest the flakes, which can cause serious health issues. So it’s a much better idea to stick with options made from stainless steel or wrought iron.

Budgies aren’t nearly strong or destructive enough to break through those materials. So instead, they’ll keep your budgie safe and protected.

Required Features

A suitable budgie cage will have specific features to encourage comfort. For instance, it needs to have perches where your bird can play, sit, or sleep.

These perches should vary in their thickness to offer better quality. After all, it’ll make sure the pressure isn’t always the same on various points of their feet.

I’d also ensure there’s at least one perch that makes contact with their toenails. This perch will help wear the nails down, which equals less trimming.

I’ve found it helpful to use branches from non-poisonous trees [3]. They offer plenty of texture and size variations to help exercise a budgie’s feet.

More importantly, budgies will have fun chewing on these branches. It’s another reason they mustn’t be poisonous or sprayed with any toxin.

Your next required feature is the cage’s feeders. I’d recommend having at least three with one for water, one for veggies, and another for sprout/seed mix.

But make sure to consider where the feeders are in relation to your cage’s perches. You don’t want a perch sitting above the feeder as your bird might end up pooping into them.

Ease of Cleaning

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll need to consider the cleaning process of each cage. Owning a budgie can be aggravating if their cage isn’t easy to clean.

I’d recommend doing significant research into this process for every cage. Look at product reviews, descriptions, YouTube videos, and various other resources.

These items will provide a detailed description of the cleaning process. You can then easily choose one that meshes with your preferences.

Another critical aspect to consider is whether the cage has a removable base or pull-out tray? I’ll always recommend choosing options with removable bases to make our lives easier.

But if it does have a pull-out tray, ensure it’s easy to slide out and remove. Otherwise, it defeats the entire purpose of having it in the first place.

a budgie casually sitting on her cage

Parakeet owners will want to hang a toy or two within their bird’s cage. Of course, a swing wouldn’t hurt to keep your bird entertained, either.

In other words, we want this cage to be as inviting as possible for your budgie. It should be somewhere they like spending time rather than a punishment.

Given this information, a few toys within the cage can go a long way. These items will keep them from being extremely bored and turn to less desirable behaviors.

I’d suggest looking into buying some clips to hang cuttlefish, greens, and millet sprays. You can move these around the cage to help give your budgie some needed exercise.

Every birdcage will have a different price tag than the next one. So it becomes essential to build a budget around what you consider necessary in a suitable option.

For instance, a bird owner with more than one budgie will need a large cage. This requirement will cost a lot more than buying an option for a single parakeet.

So your budget will need to reflect this increased price. From there, this well-constructed resource can then limit your options to a more manageable number.

Afterward, the entire buying process becomes a lot easier. You’ll no longer be picking from a sea of options but rather a drained swamp of choices.

Is a round cage good for budgies?

A round cage isn’t a good choice for budgies as they aren’t suited for them. In these rounded cages, budgies are known for being stressed due to the lack of places to hide.

Is it better to have 1 or 2 budgies?

two budgies sitting together

It’s better to have two budgies rather than one. Budgies function much better with a companion who keeps them company and strives off boredom.

How long does a budgie live in a cage?

A budgie living in a cage has a life expectancy between 5 and 15 years. So it ends up being about double what you can expect from a wild budgie.

Final Recommendation

My final recommendation would have to be buying TRIXIE Natura 3-Story Aviary Bird Cage . It has everything a budgie and its owner could want in these products.

But honestly, any of these bird cages will be a good home to the right budgie. So please, think about what’s essential and perfect for your situation before picking one.

I hope our discussions about budgie cages provide some insight into this buying process. It should’ve provided a solid head start to what makes up a high-quality option.

But if you still have a question or two, don’t hesitate to lay them on me. I’ll make sure to answer any post in our comment section as soon as possible. Thanks for reading!

Alina Hartley is a small-town girl with a ginormous love of bearded dragons. It all started with Winchester, a baby bearded who was abandoned at the shelter by his former owners because of a birth defect that caused one front leg to be shorter than the other. Alina originally went to the shelter looking for a guinea pig, but one look at Winchester and it was love at first sight. From that day on, Alina has dedicated her life to learning everything she can about bearded dragons. She loves helping new beardie parents start their incredible journey with these magnificent reptiles.
