Before you take your pick, you must understand the inner workings of these basking bulbs. It’s for your good, safety, and inner peace.
After much experimentation, I found the three (3) most important things to note before purchasing reptile heating lamps: wattage & fixing, durability, and other added features.
1. Understanding the Wattage & Socket
Both wattage and socket usually come together. To give the best experience to your beardie, keep the wattage of your basking bulb between 75 and 100 watts.
John Gardiner of UC Davis Veterinary Medicine says that the basking spot needs to be at least 88 to 95 °F [3] (31 to 35 °C) to get the maximum effect.
“The tank’s daytime light (temp) should be between 80° to 85° F (26.7° to 29.4° C), with a basking spot of 88° to 95° F, respectively.”
For the socket, however, it’ll be best if you choose the bulb that uses the standard E26 or E27 socket size.
2. Knowing the Strength and Durability of the Basking Bulb
Strength or durability is actually the biggest factor in choosing a bulb. Try to understand the material used for the outer layer of the bulb and the design to see if it’ll befit the purpose that you need it for.
For reptile basking bulbs, make sure to choose materials that wouldn’t burn out easily or shatter.
3. Considering the Features and Added Benefits
Last, but definitely not least, is to assess the added benefits and features of the basking light for bearded dragons. For most of the bulbs I’ve used, I always looked forward to seeing quite a few benefits.
The most important features you want to look for include great lighting for light-emitting bulbs, whiter light (to imitate natural sunlight), UV radiation penetration, adjustment of temperature, a digital thermometer, and more!
