Review of the 5 Best Basking Bulbs for Bearded Dragons

In my experience taking care of beardies, I came up with my list of the best reptile bulbs.

This list will give you an idea of what the best ones are in the market currently, as well as the factors that make them the best in their field.

Keep your beardie warm by using the best heating lamps today!

1. Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp 75 Watts 2-Bulb Value Pack: WINNER

basking bulb

Features of the Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp

I consider Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamp as the best because of its power and effectiveness. It offers 35% more heat and compresses it into a beam, making it more effective.

You don’t need to place it too close to the tank. Laurie Hess, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine of VCA Animal Hospitals, says that the bulb needs to be approximately 30 cm (12 inches) from the reptile [1].

“The light should be at least 12 inches or 30 cm from the reptile for it to receive the benefits.”

You can use it for up to 12 hours per day and the product lasts a maximum of 2,000 hours and even more! It’s versatile, flexible, durable and it can provide the proper temperature for basking.

What is the Size of the Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp?

The Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp is measured 4.8 x 4.2 x 2.5 inches with a weight of 1.6 ounces. It is also 75 watts in power.

Benefits of Using the Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp

  • The product is long-lasting, it can work up to 2,000 hours.
  • It’s an all-in-one UVB and UVA reptile heat lamp with visible light. (Make sure to also check out our list of the best UVB for bearded dragon.)
  • It is compatible with most 110V house wiring.
  • The level of heat is 35% more by focusing it into a light beam.
  • It is equipped with a double reflector for maximum effectivity.

Drawbacks of Using the Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp

  • Short life expectancy; not as durable as others in the same niche.
  • Users have reported explosions inside reptile habitats.
  • The combination of light, heat and radiation can burn reptiles.

Why Choose Zoo Med’s Basking Spot Lamp?

If you’re looking for an all-around basking lamp with efficient UVA and artificial UVB lighting, I would recommend Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamp.

It can give the ideal temperature and the right amount of light to your beardies just like what they get in a natural environment.

User Reviews and Testimonials About Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamp

AwsumPawsum, a Reddit user, said that Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamp has since been going strong and is doing the job for his pet reptile.

“The Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp is on its 8th month and it’s still going strong. The breaking of the lamp is usually caused by the humidity, so be sure that the tank has proper ventilation.”

Where Can I Buy It?

I purchased my Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp on Amazon. But, you can also purchase it from Chewy or straight from Zoo Med’s website.

Here’s a video discussing the different range of wattages of Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamps, as well as why they’re considered one of the best.

2. Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles: (Runner-Up) Best For Radiant Heat

basking bulb

Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight incandescent bulb is just a few factors short of Zoo Med’s Repti Basking Spot Lamp, and that’s why it’s placed in the second spot.

It can provide radiant heat via infrared light, all the while ensuring that your reptiles don’t get any type of chronic infection.

One of the best things I liked about this product is that the packaging has a table for the best distances of basking bulbs depending on the wattage.

Features of Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles

You wouldn’t have to worry about setting it up because the packaging has a set of instructions and directions on how you can use it.

Not to mention that it’s an all-in-one UV heat source that your reptiles can enjoy, it can provide excellent levels of vitamin D, radiation and visible light for better behavior and metabolism.

As per Nature [2], most fish, amphibians, and reptiles are ectotherms or poikilotherms, which means that they rely on the environment’s temperatures to maintain their body temperatures.

What is the Size of Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles?

The size of Fluker’s 100W Basking Bulb is 2.5 x 2.5 x 5.5 inches, with a weight of 0.16 ounces. It contains a single 100 wattage bulb.

Benefits of Using Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles

  • It’s simple and easy to use, just like a regular bulb.
  • You can use it as a general reptile heat lamp or basking spot bulb; the visible light is beneficial.
  • It’s not dangerous even if it’s turned on for prolonged amounts of time.
  • The fixture is standard, it’s universal.
  • It produces the right amounts of heat for baby bearded dragons to adult dragons.

Drawbacks of Using Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles

  • The bulb does not last long — some reported it only lasted for a month.
  • It’s not ideal for a medium to large-sized bearded dragon habitat.
  • It can get very fragile, especially when shaken.

Why Choose Fluker’s 100W Basking Light Bulb For Reptiles?

I would suggest using this if you’re reptile enthusiasts that are not very keen on fragility and durability. My personal experience with it was great, but not for overall strength and durability.

It’s good if you want to set up a temperature gradient for small and standard-sized tanks, thanks to its double reflector.

User Reviews and Testimonials About Fluker’s 100W Basking Spotlight Bulbs For Reptiles

Jennifer Peters, an Amazon customer, was delighted with her experience with it. She says that it’s amazing but “just be careful in leaning it on plastic because it can melt plastic because of its heat.”

Where Can I Buy It?

You can purchase it on Amazon. But, you can also buy it at Walmart, whichever you think is better and cheaper for you.

4. Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 UV Mini Compact Tube Fluorescent Lamp: Best For UVB Penetration

basking bulb

Another one of Zoo Med’s effective creations, the ReptiSun 10.0 UVB fluorescent bulb, is designed to be made as a replacement for fluorescent tubes in small to medium-sized-gallon tanks.

It’s an excellent source of heat, as well as a visible light for the interior of the tank.

Without a screen, a distance of six (6) inches provided high UVB outputs (upwards of 75%) to the reptile.

The unit is powerful, efficient, and can be useful if you want to save energy but provide the level of heat needed by whatever reptile you have.

Not only that, fluorescent lights also emit a visible light similar to the light emitted by the sun!

Features of the Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 UV Mini Compact Fluorescent Lamp

Unlike its competitors, Zoo Med’s ReptiSun is effective for up to 20 inches from the bulb’s surface. You can also put up a fine mesh between the bulb and the spot, but it can block up to 50%.

I liked the fact that it’s able to accommodate bigger and larger-gallon tanks, providing adequate heat to the spot or the enclosure. I used it in my large terrarium where I housed two (2) beardies!

What Do You Look For in a Basking Bulb For Bearded Dragons?

Before you take your pick, it’s important that you understand the inner workings of these basking bulbs. It’s for your own good, safety, and inner peace.

After tons of experimentation, I found the three (3) most important things to note before purchasing reptile heating lamps: wattage & fixing, durability, and other added features.

1. Understanding the Wattage & Socket

Both wattage and socket usually come together. To give the best experience to your beardie, keep the wattage of your basking bulb between 75 and 100 watts.

John Gardiner of UC Davis Veterinary Medicine says that the basking spot needs to be at least 88 to 95 °F [3] (31 to 35 °C) to get the maximum effect.

“The tank’s daytime light (temp) should be between 80° to 85° F (26.7° to 29.4° C), with a basking spot of 88° to 95° F, respectively.”

For the socket, however, it’ll be best if you choose the bulb that uses the standard E26 or E27 socket size.

2. Knowing the Strength and Durability of the Basking Bulb

Strength or durability is actually the biggest factors in choosing a bulb. Try to understand the material used for the outer layer of the bulb and the design to see if it’ll befit the purpose that you need it for.

For reptile basking bulbs, make sure to choose materials that wouldn’t burn out easily or shatter.

3. Considering the Features and Added Benefits

Last, but definitely not least, is to assess the added benefits and features of the basking light for bearded dragons. For most of the bulbs I’ve used, I always looked forward to seeing quite a few benefits.

The most important features you want to look for include great lighting for light-emitting bulbs, whiter light (to imitate natural sunlight), UV radiation penetration, adjustment of temperature, digital thermometer, and more!

FAQs

Want to know more? Here are the top questions I consider the most important in dealing with bearded dragon basking bulbs:

What Kind of Basking Light Do Bearded Dragons Need?

To fulfill the basking process completely, get a basking light that can provide both heat and UV rays to the enclosure.

How Far Should a Basking Light Be From a Bearded Dragon?

The typical distance of a basking light from a bearded dragon should be at least 12 inches or 30 cm in distance for a 75 to 100 watts bulb. But this will depend on the wattage of the bulb you’re using.

When Should You Replace Your Basking Bulb?

Experts recommend replacing it once every three (3) to six (6) months [4].
The effect of UV fades over time, even if visible light is emitted or if the light isn’t burned out yet.

Which Bearded Dragon Basking Bulb Will You Go With?

My experience has led me to know what the best units of basking bulbs for bearded dragons are the ones with proper wattage, standard socket, strength, and added benefits.

So, if you ever find yourself stuck in a corner in choosing between different basking lights for bearded dragons, now you know where to go!

Alina originally went to the shelter looking for a guinea pig, but one look at Winchester and it was love at first sight. From that day on, Alina has dedicated her life to learning everything she can about bearded dragons.
